Aronia saplings were brought from Atatürk Horticultural Central Research Institute within the framework of cooperation with the Faculty of Applied Sciences of our university. With the participation of our Rector Prof. Dr Fethi Ahmet Polat, Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry Mehmet Gün, Vice Rectors of our University Prof. Dr Yaşar Karadağ, Prof. Dr Murat Aydin Şanda, Prof. Dr Ulaş Çaydaş, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Prof. Dr Hüseyin Kırımoğlu, the Secretary General of our University, Harun Demir, and the faculty members and students of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, the aronia saplings were planted in the research areas.

Project responsible Prof. Dr Yaşar Karadağ statedAs a result of our cooperation with the Atatürk Horticultural Central Research Institute, we implemented the project titled ‘The effect of different fertilizer applications on plant growth and development in some Aronia (Aronia melanocarpa) varieties’. In this respect, we planted 54 Aronia saplings, consisting of Viking and Nero varieties, in the research and trial areas of our university with the application of 4 different fertilizer doses (humic acid, vermicompost, organomineral fertilizer and chemical fertilizer, respectively) taking into account the distance between 1.5m rows and 3m rows.” He further emphasized that Aronia, also known as the Montenegrin Blueberry and whose homeland is North America, is quite resistant to cold. Karadağ explained that fruits can be consumed fresh as well as fruit juice, tea, jam and yoghurt. Lastly, Karadag thanked our Rector Prof. Dr Fethi Ahmet Polat for his great support to bring this plant, which has anti-aging, anti-cancer, immune-enhancing and high-cholesterol-lowering effects due to its antioxidant content, to Muş within the scope of the project and to carry out trial studies.

Rector Polat expressed his hope that this project will make a great economic contribution to Muş agriculture and congratulated everyone who contributed to the project.
