International Symposium on Quranic Translations: Issues and Solutions Begins
Our university is hosting an international symposium where academics from various disciplines in the field of Islamic Studies within the Faculty of Islamic Sciences gather.
In collaboration with Muş Alparslan University and the Islamic Sciences Research Foundation (ISAV), the International Symposium on "Quranic Translations: Issues and Solutions" is being held from October 13 to 15. The symposium commenced on October 13, 2023, at the Conference Hall of the Faculty of Islamic Sciences. The opening of the symposium was attended by our Deputy Rector, Prof. Dr. Kenan Yıldırım, Mayor Feyat Asya, as well as numerous academics and students from our university and various universities in our country.
During the opening speech of the symposium, our Deputy Rector, Prof. Dr. Kenan Yıldırım, delivered a speech. In his address, Yıldırım emphasized that the universal message of the Quran can only be understood through its translation into different languages. He highlighted that non-Arabic-speaking communities often turn to Quranic translations in their respective languages as the first source for understanding the Quran. Yıldırım also underscored the increasing support for the idea that, in the modern era, the Quran is considered the primary reference of the Islamic religion, which can only be understood through Quranic translations. However, he pointed out that this approach could potentially erode the social, cultural, legal, and ethical perspectives of the Islamic faith. Yıldırım concluded his words by saying, "Translating the miraculous word of God into another language is certainly not an easy task. The Faculty of Islamic Sciences at our university has embarked on a project to improve this translation and address potential issues that may arise in this field. I hope this work will bring good to the Islamic world, and I greet you all with the blessings of Allah."
Following the speeches by our Deputy Rector, Prof. Dr. Kenan Yıldırım, the symposium's opening conference was held with an online presentation by Prof. Dr. Fethi Ahmet Polat from Istanbul University's Faculty of Theology, who previously served as our university's rector, discussing "Turkish Quranic Translations in the Shadow of the Return to the Quran."
Other sessions at the symposium continue with online presentations of papers by expert academics from various universities.
