Honey harvesting was carried out at MAUN

Scientific studies and honey production continue rapidly in the bee colonies that were integrated into our university five years ago. The honey harvest of the bees spending June and July in the alpine (1988 mt) lands of Muş's Altınova town has been completed.

The honey harvest was conducted by Research Assistant Mustafa Güneşdoğdu, responsible for the Beekeeping Unit in the Faculty of Applied Sciences, and Research Assistant Yasir Tufan, along with Agricultural Engineer Ahmet Furkan Küçüktatıl, Zeki Arifoğlu, and Hamit Pülat from our university's Faculty of Applied Sciences. Speaking about the matter, Research Assistant Güneşdoğdu expressed that they work with the native bee species Caucasian Honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) and mentioned that the yield per colony was lower compared to the previous year (2022).

Muş Alparslan University's Vice Rector and Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Yaşar Karadağ, stated that this year, the amount of rainfall during the spring months decreased significantly, and with the warming of the weather, endemic plants and flowers in the vegetation bloomed rapidly due to the extreme temperatures. Karadağ pointed out that this rapid flowering leads to quick seed formation for the continuation of the plant generation, resulting in a shorter flowering period and a decrease in honey production compared to previous years.

Research Assistant Güneşdoğdu conveyed their thanks to our Rector, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Alican, and Vice Rector and Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Yaşar Karadağ, for their support.
