Dr. A. Üstün Çatalbaş Will Continue His Works on Los Turcos in Argentina with the Support of TÜBİTAK

Dr. Üstün Çatalbaş, faculty member of the Gerontology Department of MAUN Faculty of Health Sciences, was entitled to go to Argentina as part of the TÜBİTAK 2219 Post-Doctoral Research Scholarship.

Doing his PhD on Latin America in the United States, Dr. Üstün Çatalbaş started his studies on Los Turcos (Turks) during his research trips to the region. Çatalbaş, who deepened his studies on Los Turcos after he started to work at MAUN, will continue his research based on in-depth interviews and participant observation within the scope of 2219 Postdoctoral Research Scholarship in Argentina. Çatalbaş will carry out his research for 1 year at Argentina Quilmes State University.

Making a statement on the subject, Çatalbaş said, “Ottoman citizens who immigrated to Latin America during the Ottoman period are called Los Turcos (Turks) in the countries of the region. Even though these people, mostly from Lebanon, Palestine and Jordan, are not ethnically Turkish, they were called Turkish (Los Turcos) because of their Ottoman passport. These people, who have come to important positions from sports to art, from business to politics, are the heroes of a forgotten migration that is unfortunately the least studied in social sciences. I am excited to continue my studies on this subject, which I started to research during my doctorate, in Argentina.”
